In plain English
SEO is how Google and the other search engines decide who shows up first when someone types a question in. It isn’t paid ads and it isn’t magic. It’s whether your site clearly says what it does, loads fast, and whether other trusted sites bother linking to you. Search “plumber Leeds” and the one on top probably has the location right there in the title, a snappy site, and other local businesses vouching for them with links.
It rewards being genuinely useful and easy to find, not clever tricks. Further down the rabbit hole you meet backlinks, domain reputation and the rest; the guide covers those.
A worked example
Say two plumbers work in the same small town. One’s website just says “We do plumbing”, loads slowly, and nobody links to it anywhere online. The other’s says clearly “Local plumbing in Aldbury, emergency callouts, boiler repairs, twenty years’ experience”, loads in a couple of seconds, and the parish council site and a local housing association both link to it.
Search “emergency plumber near me” from that town and the second one appears first. They get the phone call. Nothing sneaky about it; their site was simply built to be found.
The usual mix-up
People think SEO means stuffing keywords everywhere and hoping Google doesn’t notice. It notices. Modern search engines are sharp enough to punish that, and you’ll rank lower or vanish rather than climb.
