An API is a tidy way for one program to ask another for one specific bit of information, rather than loading a whole website to find it. Picture an enormous spreadsheet with millions of rows. Instead of scrolling through it, something asks “what’s the rainfall for CM1 1AA today?” and gets back just that number. Fast, quiet, no fuss.
Your AI uses these constantly, whether you clock it or not, whenever it fetches the weather, a price, or your calendar.
A worked example
Say you’re planning an outdoor event and want to check the forecast for the date you’re eyeing up. Rather than you visiting the Met Office site and typing the answer back into a chat, an assistant that has been connected to a weather service’s API asks it directly. You type “what’s the forecast for Manchester on the 15th” and it comes back with the actual numbers for that date, not something stale from whenever the model was trained.
You don’t see the spreadsheet or the request happening behind the scenes. You just get the answer, clean and current, like it rang up and asked.
The usual mix-up
People treat APIs as free and infinite. They’re not. Every request hits someone’s server, and if too many people lean on the same one at once it slows down or starts costing the site money, which is exactly why limits exist.
