What you’ll be able to do
You’ll take whatever mess you’ve got, typed notes, a slide deck, a chapter you’ve photographed from a textbook, and end up with a proper flashcard deck. One that you’ll actually revise from, not one that sits in a folder making you feel guilty. The AI does the boring bit (turning paragraphs into questions), you do the bit that matters (checking it got the facts right).
Before you start
Flashcards work because of something called active recall. Instead of rereading your notes and nodding along, feeling like you know it, you’re forced to produce the answer yourself. That struggle is the point. It’s harder in the moment and it sticks better later. Pair that with spaced repetition, seeing a card again just as you’re about to forget it, and you’ve got the two things that actually move information into long-term memory. Rereading doesn’t do this. Highlighting doesn’t do this. Cards, done properly, do.
Before you hand anything to an AI, have a quick look at your notes. Are they actually notes, or are they just a wall of text you copied off a slide? The AI can only make good cards from good source material. If your notes are vague or wrong, your cards will be vague or wrong too, just faster.
You’ll also want to know where the cards are going. Anki, the free spaced repetition app, is the obvious home for a deck like this, and it’s what I’ll assume throughout. It imports from a simple tab separated text file, question in one column, answer in the next, so that’s the format we’ll aim for.
Get set up
For this job I’d reach for ChatGPT or Claude first. Both can take a block of pasted notes, or a photo of handwritten notes, and turn it into question and answer pairs. Gemini and Copilot can do a similar job if that’s what you’ve already got open, though ChatGPT and Claude tend to be more consistent for this specific task.
There are also purpose-built options worth knowing about. Quizlet has its own AI card generation built in, so you paste notes in and get a study set out, no separate app needed. NotebookLM, from Google, lets you upload your material (documents, slides, that sort of thing) and it’ll build study aids from it, including flashcard-style outputs. RemNote takes a different approach again, blending your actual notes with spaced repetition cards inside the same app, which suits people who want to keep notes and revision in one place rather than jumping between tools.
None of these is objectively “best”. If you already live in Anki, get your cards into a text file and import them. If you already use RemNote for notes, stay there. If you just want something quick with no setup, Quizlet or NotebookLM will get you moving faster.

Once you’ve got a response, copy the whole tab-separated block into a plain text file, save it as a.txt, and use Anki’s import function to bring it in as a new deck.
Check the result
Don’t just import and trust. Read through the deck once before you start reviewing it properly. You’re checking for a few specific things.
First, factual accuracy. Does the answer on the back actually match what your notes said? This is the one that matters most, because a wrong card teaches you the wrong thing with total confidence, which is worse than not having a card at all.
Second, one fact per card. If a card is trying to test three things at once (“what is X, when did it happen, and why does it matter”), split it. Cards with more than one job in them are harder to mark right or wrong, and that ambiguity kills spaced repetition.
Third, check the cloze deletions actually hide the right word. Sometimes an AI will cloze out something trivial (like “the”) instead of the actual term you need to remember. If that’s happened, just ask it to redo them.
A good quick test: pick five cards at random and ask yourself, would I mark myself right or wrong on this without checking the notes again? If you’re unsure what the “correct” answer even is, that card needs fixing before it goes anywhere near your review queue.
Once you’re happy, start reviewing daily. Little and often beats a big cramming session the day before.
If it doesn’t work
A few things go wrong more often than others.
Cards come out too vague. Usually this means your original notes were vague. Go back and add detail before regenerating, rather than asking the AI to invent specifics it doesn’t have. If it doesn’t know the answer, it shouldn’t be guessing one, and a decent prompt should stop it doing that, but check anyway.
Cards repeat the same fact in different words. This tends to happen with longer chunks of notes. Ask the AI to review its own output for duplicates before you import.
Handwriting comes back wrong. If you got a photo transcribed and something looks off, don’t assume it’s correct just because it’s confident. Compare it against the original page.
Now the important bit. Don’t upload anything you shouldn’t. That means no whole chapters of a copyrighted textbook, no scanned personal medical or financial documents, and nothing with someone else’s private information in it (a classmate’s name attached to grades, for instance). A short section of your own notes for personal study is one thing; feeding an entire book into a chatbot is another, and it isn’t something I’d do or recommend.
And regardless of how good the deck looks, check any card you’d actually be marked on in an exam. AI doesn’t know your syllabus, your lecturer’s exact wording, or which definition your course insists on. It only knows what you gave it.
