In plain English
A prompt is just whatever you type or say to the assistant. The question, the instructions, the file you pasted in, all of it, that’s the prompt. There’s no separate box for “the real prompt” and another for chit-chat, it’s all going in as one thing, so it all counts.
A good prompt usually does a few jobs at once. It says who you are and what the answer is for, it says what the actual task is, it says what shape you want back (a list, three paragraphs, plain English, whatever), and it says what to leave out. That’s really it. Not clever, just complete.
A worked example
Say you type “write me an email about the meeting.” You’ll get something back, sure, but it’ll be generic, because the assistant has nothing to work with. Which meeting? To whom? Saying what?
Now try: “I’m a team lead writing to my department after a budget meeting. Tell them the project’s delayed but nobody’s losing their job, keep it under 150 words, no corporate waffle.” Same task, wildly different result, because now it knows the job, the audience and the shape. And if it gets something wrong, telling it “you assumed X, it’s actually Y” is still prompting, it’s not admitting defeat.
The usual mix-up
People think a prompt has to be some kind of clever one-liner, a magic phrase that unlocks the good answer. So they type three words, get something vague back, and blame the assistant for being rubbish. Really the assistant just wasn’t told enough. Plain sentences that explain the job properly will beat a “clever” cryptic one every single time.
